Fall 2014

Date Released: 25 August 2014

In this issue: Homecoming, Winners and By-Laws

President's Message

It is with great excitement that I address the students, alumni, faculty and staff in our fall newsletter. This moment is bittersweet, as this is the last newsletter in which I will address you as your president. I welcome new students from the class of 2018 to Case Western Reserve University and am delighted to see established students return to conquer another year. We are happy to have you here, and remember, if you need anything, please contact the African American Alumni Association and connect with our alumni.

The AAAA boasts many accomplishments over the past three years. We have successfully launched the “Reach Back—Raise Up” campaign to raise funds for African American students. In addition to raising funds, we bridged the gap between alumni and students and strengthened our engagement with future generations. Alumni have also reconnected through creative programming by our association. While there are other goals to achieve, we have built a strong foundation for the next set of leaders and eagerly anticipate what the future holds.

We look forward to seeing everyone at Homecoming next month. The events that the program committee has planned are activities that alumni from all classes will surely enjoy. From the welcome reception to the business meeting, and the dinner dance with national recording artist Oleta Adams to the prayer breakfast—all of the “Who’s Who” alumni will be in attendance. That includes you!

As I conclude my final address, I thank you all for allowing me to serve as your president. I am especially grateful for the board members who have made this journey a memorable experience, full of successes that will continue to uplift this association for many years. I ask all members to consider using their talents for the betterment of this great association and to continue its legacy. The impact that you can have on the lives of future alumni is immense. I admit the pay is low (smile), but touching the lives of our students is well worth the effort!

I look forward to meeting with old friends and connecting with recent alums and current students during Homecoming. Stay tuned for the next chapter of the AAAA.

Connect with your past. Pay it forward to our students. Build a strong foundation. Be proud of our future.

Alicia Graves (CWR '05), President, African American Alumni Association
