The Carnegie Corp. names President Barbara R. Snyder a 2017 academic leader
In September, The Carnegie Corporation of New York named Case Western Reserve University President Barbara R. Snyder a recipient of its 2017 Academic Leadership Award. The honor recognizes college and university presidents for their vision and a commitment to excellence across multiple areas, among them undergraduate excellence, international engagement and the development of interdisciplinary programs. International Alumni Profile
Roger Wei (CWR '96) is president of Weis and Beyond International Limited. Roger's background includes experience in wealth management, immigration education and the manufacturing and service sector for multinational companies.
Roger is one of the newest members of The Alumni Association Board of Directors. Roger primarily lives in Cleveland, but has dual citizenship in China as well. While doing business in China, he has been an active member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, a mentor at Jiaotong University E Talent Association, a guest speaker at local universities and dedicated volunteer at Cedar Tree Coaching Program, Teach for China. Through his work on the Board of Directors, Roger hopes to help improve CWRU's international influence.
University Researchers Design Origami-Inspired Robot
Case Western Reserve University researcher, Professor Kiju Lee, and her team have developed origami-inspired robots. After studying electrical and electronics engineering at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, Korea, and mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, Lee began teaching at CWRU in 2008 in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. International Students Move-in on Campus
For the 2017-18 academic year, CWRU welcomed hundreds of new students from around the globe. They come from far and wide—from Oman and Qatar, India and China, Uganda and Ghana, Germany and Spain, Brazil and Costa Rica—and they come from close to home—from Canada, Mexico and nearly every U.S. state. Our first-year undergraduates hail from over 700 global hometowns!
While our graduate and professional students came to Cleveland on rolling dates throughout the summer, first-year undergrads all made their way to campus on August 19-20. This year, all of the undergraduates attended the same orientation together, providing a bounty of opportunities for students from all different backgrounds to build friendships as soon as they arrived on campus.
The Center for International Affairs staff, along with leadership from throughout the university, welcomed new students’ parents at the Global Parents Luncheon on August 21. The Center for International Affairs staff was also able to meet each student face-to-face through orientation presentations and individual check-ins. Our first year students, seeking degrees of all levels, are now settled in, joining organizations on campus, building lifelong friendships and preparing for their first round of midterm exams. Wish them luck!

Summer Send-offs Welcome New Students Domestically and Internationally
Each year, The Alumni Association of Case Western Reserve University hosts Summer Send-off events. Ten cities are selected domestically to host these events where alumni, current students, incoming students and their parents are invited to mingle, ask questions and form friendships. Domestic events were held in Baltimore/D.C., Bay Area, Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, New York and Pittsburgh.
Two Summer Send-offs were held internationally this year. These events were hosted in Beijing and Shanghai and had over 260 guests in attendance. Students and parents were involved in Q & A sessions with alumni, current students, faculty and staff.
Student Featured in Microsoft Commercial
Xyla Foxlin is a senior at CWRU, studying mechanical and aerospace engineering. Foxlin's friends sent her a link in regards to Microsoft's casting call, which sought students with their own startups. Foxlin is the creator of Parihug, a company that creates Bluetooth and wi-fi enabled teddy bears that vibrate when one is hugged. The commercial is airing nationally and has even appeared during primetime shows.
CWRU Hosting International Symposium on Running Successful Maker Movement and Innovation Spaces
In September, almost 350 attendees from across the U.S. and the world came to Northeast Ohio to share ideas on what contributes to a successful makerspace—and how innovation ultimately energizes student creators and stimulates important economic development. The International Symposium on Academic Makerspaces (ISAM) was sponsored by The Higher Education Makerspaces Initiatives and tickets were sold out. Visit The Daily to learn more about the Symposium
