In May, 1,310 students received postgraduate degrees during the 2016 spring commencement ceremony, including 701 women and 609 men. 102 members of the class were dual-degree recipients, most of which were attained by graduates of the School of Medicine (39 graduates) and the College of Arts and Sciences (35).

As Case Western Reserve University continues to attract talented minds from far and wide, the graduate school class represented all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The most students were from Ohio (481), California (58), Pennsylvania (58) and Michigan (56). Internationally, the graduating class was comprised of students from 37 countries, with the largest number of students coming from China (174), India (55), Canada (19), Republic of Korea (10) and Saudi Arabia (10).

The School of Medicine bestowed the highest number of postgraduate degrees, accounting for 403 graduates, followed by the Weatherhead School of Management (263), the School of Law (162) and the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences (101).

As our graduates move on to more adventures, we wish them the best and look forward to their future accomplishments.

Shanghai Summer Send-Off a Success, More Events Scheduled in August

Shanghai Summer Send-off students, alumni and family members

Every summer, The Alumni Association of Case Western Reserve University, in collaboration with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, invites alumni, current students, parents and friends to help us welcome incoming students and their families to the CWRU community.

Last month saw the first-ever international Summer Send-Off in Shanghai, China, where 70 attendees, including alumni, current students, members of the class of 2020 and their parents, participated in a panel discussion on international travel and life at CWRU. Incoming students attended the event from as far as Taipei and Beijing.

If you live near a Summer Send-off event, please consider sharing your CWRU story with an incoming student. We can’t think of a better way to welcome our newest students! This year’s remaining events include:

Welcoming the World, One Student at a Time

Case Western Reserve University’s International Friendship Program helps international students transition to life in the U.S., offers hosts the unique opportunity to learn about diverse nationalities and cultures, and serves as a springboard for friendships that last beyond a student’s time at CWRU.

Each year faculty, staff and alumni hosts are matched with international students. Hosts and students get together to enjoy home-cooked meals, events on campus and outings in Cleveland.

Lisa Kollins, Social Justice Institute administrator, and her family hosted Sahin Kirdim (LAW ’16) through the program. “Our family’s connection with Sahin, our international friend from Turkey, has proved to be a highlight of the year,” Kollins said. “We shared meals, introduced him to some of our favorite sports in Cleveland, included him in extended family events and looked forward to each time we spent together. Learning about his Turkish culture and perspective was illuminating and reinforced our belief in and the importance of cross-cultural relationships.”

“Our favorite question from Sahin came during the third quarter of watching his first Cleveland Browns football game. We had been explaining the nuances of the sport, positions and plays. Near the end of the game Sahin asked, 'I don't understand - why do they keep dropping the ball?  ‘Exactly our question, Sahin. Exactly our question.’”

"I came to the U.S. to make my career goals come true,” says Sahin. “The International Friendship Program gave me the chance to meet Lisa, Richard and their extended family. Richard prepared great dinners and Lisa and I went to museums and science centers. We played board games with Lisa's nieces; I gave the kids an opportunity to defeat a doctorate student. It is great to know that I will always have local friends in my favorite U.S. city. The best part? There will be someone waiting for me at the airport the next time I come to Cleveland."

With many international students starting at CWRU this fall, alumni, faculty and staff are encouraged to consider welcoming one of them to Cleveland. Hosts will be matched with international students in August and September.

Carve Out Your Place on CWRU's Campus

As part of the expansion of the Linsalata Alumni Center, a paver stone courtyard is being added between the original structure and the expansion. We are inviting alumni to leave a permanent mark on this exciting new project by purchasing a paver stone through our Pave It Forward program. Each paver stone is an eight-inch square that accommodates up to five lines of text with 20 characters per line. This custom inscription is a lasting way for alumni to celebrate their CWRU connection or honor a relative or friend, especially those who have helped pave the way at CWRU. Order by August 31 to be part of the initial installation!  Pave It Forward...
