2013 Newton D. Baker Distinguished Service Award: Representative, Louis B. Stokes (LAW ’53)

Representative Stokes served 15 terms in the House of Representatives and has been a longtime friend and advocate for Case Western Reserve and the community. He helped secure funding for the CWRU Biomedical Research Building, the Minority Affairs Office at the School of Medicine and the Healthy People 2000 Initiative. He sponsors the Louis Stokes Fellowship in Community Development at CWRU, the Louis Stokes Leadership Symposium on Social Issues and the Community at CWRU. He is also the namesake of the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Center at the Biomedical Research Building, has served on the Visiting Committee of the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing for many years and visibly supports numerous school and university events with his presence and philanthropy. 

He is a faculty member at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, volunteers at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Hospital and the Louis Stokes Annex of the Cleveland Public Library.  He is also affiliated with the Louis Stokes Laboratories at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC and the Louis Stokes Health Sciences Library at Howard University.
