2011 Distinguished Alumnus Award: Theodore J. Castele, MD (ADL '51, MED '57)

Affectionately known as "Dr. Ted", Castele is recognized for his extraordinary contributions to the health and welfare of Clevelanders and his long-standing support of university initiatives.

In 1975, he introduced the world to the concept of the television news physician as medical editor for Cleveland’s WEWS-TV NewsChannel 5. In that role, Castele made nearly a billion video house calls to discuss health questions—from the treatment of the common cold to the most complex medical breakthroughs. He appeared on multiple news shows each week and hosted Health Exchange, a series of call-in specials. For 38 years, he shared his wisdom and tireless leadership in his profession, his community and the university.
