Research Statement
Research Overview: Functional Nanomaterials

Dr. Samia’s research interests center around the fabrication and study of intermetallic and metal oxide nanostructures with emphasis on chemical design to achieve desired properties and function. The main applications are in the areas of catalysis, high-energy-density energy storage, high resolution bio-imaging and nanotheranostics.

Because of the wide range of synthetic and analytical methods used in the group’s research, graduate and undergraduate students will have an opportunity to work on nanoparticle synthesis, surface functionalization, nanoparticle assembly, and extensive characterization of the electronic and magnetic properties of the resulting nanomaterials. The laboratory research experience will involve the utilization of a variety of modern instrumentation to characterize and evaluate these materials and their properties, including mass spectrometry, chromatography, voltammetry, magnetometry, x-ray powder diffractometry, photoelectron spectroscopy, optical and electron microscopies.

Overall, the goal of the research program in the Samia Group is to study and control the surface chemistry, and magneto-eletronic properties of intermetallic and metal oxide nanoparticles through chemical design. This research effort will in turn have a profound impact on the application of these materials in alternative energy technologies and in biomedicine.
