Radiation Safety Training

New Radworker Training:

Every employee that works with radioactivity must have the initial training course.

Radworker Retraining:

Every employee that works with radioactivity must retrain annually.

Ancillary Personnel:

Ancillary personnel listed under an Authorized User are defined as these individuals who work in RAM laboratories but have minor, incidental contact with radioactive material, such as dish washers. These individuals have the option of taking either right-to-know training or New Radiation Training and must retrain annually.

X-ray Training:
Personnel working with x-ray producing devices must take this course.

Radioactive Waste Separation
Radioactive waste needs to be separated several ways for pickup.

1. Isotope
Place different isotopes in different bags.
2. Solid, liquid, and scintillation vials needs to be separated. Gels can be placed in the solid waste.
3. Sharps
Keep waste such as pipette tips in a cardboard box for pickup. Sharps like needles must be in a red rigid container.

Hard plastic containers should be used to contain radioactive waste.

Radioactive Waste Forms
There are two different waste forms

1. General radioactive waste form
Please list each item of waste on it with activity, isotope and type of waste such as liquid, solid, or scintillation vials.
2. Liquid waste form
Liquid waste must use this additional form for each liquid waste container. List the chemical constituents, volume, isotope, activity, date, and the pH (which must be between 6 and 8) on this form.
Note: Place the liquid waste on both forms.

Caution: Radioactive Material sign, orange on yellow.

This label must be posted in all laboratories containing radioactive material.
