Policy Statement

Former employees are eligible to be re-employed if they left university employment as employees in good standing and have not been subject to Positive Corrective Action for behavior within the last year of employment. If an employee was terminated, or resigned in lieu of termination, the employee is not eligible for rehire. However, if the employee was terminated or resigned in lieu of termination under the Attendance and Absences Policy for excessive absenteeism, the employee is eligible for rehire after five (5) years of the termination date.

If the employee was laid off due to lack of funding, lack of work, or a reorganization, the employee is eligible for rehire even if the employee has a verbal warning or a written warning within the last year. However, laid off employees who have been suspended within the last year are not eligible for rehire.

Former employees who are on inactive status due to lay-off will have first consideration over external candidates for open positions for which they are qualified. All former employees will be given the same opportunities and will need to comply with the same requirements as other applicants. If hired, former employees will be treated as new employees for purposes of orientation and training. Benefits based on length of service will be calculated using the rehire start date as their first date of employment unless a benefit plan provides other methods of calculation.
