Implementation Priorities and Roadmap

Implementation of the core strategies set forth by the Strategic Plan requires careful planning and priority setting. In order to meet the university's technology goals, priorities and roadmaps for implementing technology initiatives are set by university IT Governance. A list of planned and completed initiatives in fiscal year 2013 is presented below.

Improve Research Competitiveness

  • Create, experiment with, and gain experience with two or more “big data” environments. This will include creating local pilot platforms as well as experimenting with environments provided by vendors, including Google, assessing the feasibility of both approaches, and exploring connections with data visualization. Currently underway as project 1383.
  • Create a complete campus cyber-infrastructure plan that can be used in the context of future proposals to federal funding agencies, and that can be used to guide our own infrastructure development to support research. Completed as project 1144.
  • Design and plan to deploy a FISMA-compliant research environment in a way that is consistent with the campus cyber-infrastructure plan. Completed as project 1302.
  • Prototype High Performance Computing (HPC) in the cloud. Research, document, and implement a storage strategy for large volumes (200TB to over 1PB) of research data. Currently underway as project 612.
  • Move High Performance Computing (HPC) onto the KSL Data Center UPS. Improve the reliability and availability of the HPC cluster by changing the power feed from utility power to UPS with generator. Completed as project 622.
