The state of Ohio grants the charter to establish Western Reserve College, the first college in northern Ohio.

1852

Nancy Talbot Clark graduates from the Medical Department of Western Reserve College. She is the second woman in the United States to receive a regular medical degree.

The Case School of Applied Science is incorporated.

1895

Western Reserve University biologist Francis H. Herrick publishes The American Lobster, opening fishermen's eyes to the realization that their practices had put the animal on the verge of extinction.

Edward W. Morley publishes the atomic weight of oxygen, the basis for calculating the weights of all other elements.

Professor Dayton C. Miller takes the first full X-ray of the human body—his own.
