Case Western Reserve anthropologist Donald C. Johanson discovers "Lucy," who, at 3 million years old, leads him to theorize that man and ape diverged no more than 8 million years ago, not the 15 to 20 million years previously believed by paleontologists.

Historian David D. Van Tassel starts History Day, a competition intended to foster enthusiasm for historical research among secondary students. Within five years, the event would become a weeklong national event.

Alumnus Frank Rudy creates the Nike Air Sole.

The Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing launches nursing's first professional doctoral program.
