Annual Workshop Call for Presentations

Submission Guidelines | Workshop Strands | Presentation Narrative | Questions | Submit

YPS seeks presenters of all backgrounds and experience levels.  Feedback from the event consistently indicates that attendees appreciate learning about new and different projects and resources, as well as having the opportunity to network.  If you have done service-learning or worked with youth, you are eligible to present.  Even if you have never presented before, this is a great opportunity to share your project, skills, experience, and/or knowledge with others.

Why Present?

  • Network with an audience of over 250 service-oriented K-12 educators, students, and youth development professionals.
  • Promote your specific project and encourage its replication – a great way to recognize your youth!
  • Promote your organization’s programs and resources available to K-12 youth and/or educators.
  • Gain exposure for your organization and its mission.
  • Show your support of youth service and philanthropy.

Submission Guidelines

  1. Proposals must be submitted using the online Call for Presentations form.
  2. Over 200 individuals typically attend the YPS Annual Workshop including adults representing K-12 schools, adults representing youth serving agencies, and youth (primarily grades 6-12) largely from Northeast Ohio.  Please carefully consider the target audience for your presentation.
  3. Interactive sessions which provide an opportunity to work in small groups and/or participate in discussions with both the presenter/s and other attendees are preferred by our attendees, particularly the youth.
  4. Presentations by youth are strongly encouraged.
  5. All sessions are 50 minutes.  Presenters are expected to allow a few minutes at the end of the presentation for attendees to complete a session evaluation.  Please be sure to structure your presentation to fit this time frame.
  6. Proposals will be selected based on their relevance to workshop strands and perceived interest to attendees.  YPS aims to ensure a diverse array of sessions for attendees with regard to presenters, topics, and target audiences.
  7. A flip chart and markers will be provided for all presenters if requested.  Any additional equipment will be the responsibility of the presenters.  (Accepted presenters will receive a listing of available equipment and related fees.)
  8. Workshop registration for the primary presenter is included.  Additional presenters wanting to attend any portion of the conference will be required to pay a registration fee of $40.
  9. Accepted presenters will be offered exhibit space at a discounted rate of $10.
  10. A copy of all handouts and PowerPoint presentations must be provided to YPS on or before February 3, 2010.
  11. Acceptance to present authorizes the Mandel Center to use photos taken of you and all co-presenters during the 2010 Annual Workshop, as well as information about you and your presentation, in publications (i.e., in newsletters, on website, or in future brochures).

Workshop Strands

Presentations should correspond to one of the following workshop strands:

Service-Learning In Action
This strand addresses specific examples of K-12 service-learning in both school and community based settings.  This is an opportunity to share the successes and lessons learned of a successful service-learning project.  Presentations may address: how the project developed, what went well, what should be different if done again, how funding was acquired, how the project was evaluated, and the role of youth in the entire process.  Projects of all types are encouraged (intergenerational, environmental, mentoring, advocacy, etc.).  YPS is particularly interested in projects where youth play a significant leadership role in the development and implementation of the project and in service-learning programs sponsored by national organizations.

Service-Learning Methodology
This strand addresses the “How-To”s of K-12 service-learning.  YPS is especially interested in presentations that cover developing and maintaining organizational partnerships (particularly across sectors – nonprofit, government, and corporate) and youth serving in meaningful leadership roles (i.e., on nonprofit boards, youth advisory councils, etc.).  Other topics may include: service-learning overview, reflection strategies, service-learning curriculum, marketing, evaluation, research, etc.

Youth Leadership Development
This strand addresses providing K-12 youth with necessary skills for becoming actively involved in their communities.  Topics may include: project planning, ways to volunteer, diversity, resources for volunteering, team building, decision-making, problem-solving, public relations/media, service after high school graduation, etc.  These sessions should be targeted to youth attendees and are typically for youth only.
