Intracerebral Hemorrhage - Basal Ganglia (Putamen) with Extension into the Temporal Lobe

A 55 year-old man with a long history of hypertension presented with a receptive aphasia and mild right sided weakness which developed over 30 minutes.

Basal Ganglia Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ICH) with Extension into the Temporal Lobe: Axial CT scans. Note the large intracerebral hemorrhage originating in the area of the left posterior basal ganglia, which extends into the deep white matter of the left temporal lobe. ICHs in this location may result in a receptive aphasia. Otherwise, receptive aphasia is most often caused by an embolus to the inferior division of the left middle cerebral artery.
