Epidural Hematoma

A 25 year-old man was struck by a baseball on the right side of his head. Four hours later, he became lethargic, vomited and developed a left hemiparesis.

Epidural Hematoma. Axial CT scan. Note the large convex area of bright signal intensity. This is the pattern of an epidural hematoma, which often occurs as a delayed event following a skull fracture and bleeding of the middle meningeal artery. This is a surgical emergency which requires immediate evacuation.
