Posterior Cerebral Artery Branch Infarction - Case 3

A 54 year-old woman developed the sudden onset of difficulty seeing on the left side. In the ER, her EKG showed new onset atrial fibrillation. Four months later, she reported headaches and a CT scan was done.

Note the Encephalomalacia in the Right Occipital Lobe

Posterior Cerebral Artery (PCA) Infarction: Axial CT scans 4 months after the stroke. Note the very dark signal in the right occipital lobe. This represents encephalomalacia from the earlier stroke. The tissue is physically gone and replaced by a cystic cavity, which is filled with CSF; hence the dark (low) signal on CT imaging.
