Syrinx - Case 2

A 46 year-old woman presented with loss of pin sensation over the trunk associated with urinary urgency and frequency.

Outline the Syrinx

Syringomyelia (Syrinx): (Left) T2-weighted sagittal MRI scan of the thoracic spine; (Right) T2-weighted axial MRI at the level of T3. On the sagittal scan, note the two central cystic cavities. The rostral one expands the spinal cord and has septae within it.

A syrinx often first presents with bilateral upper extremity loss of pain and temperature sensation from early involvement of the crossing spinothalamic fibers. Syringomyelia is often associated with congenital malformations, intrinsic cord tumors, or may follow spinal trauma.
