A Message from Susan Stagno, MD

As the new training director for the general psychiatry program, I am very pleased to have the opportunity to welcome you to our website and feel confident that you will like what you see here!

This is a very exciting time to train in psychiatry and the program here at University Hospital Case Medical Center provides a full range of experiences to prepare you for a dynamic career whether your interest is in private practice, academic medicine or research. Our combined training facilities and faculty offer residents many diverse opportunities to work in a variety of mental health care systems where they evaluate and manage patients with a wide array of psychiatric disorders. We have a distinguished research faculty and a clinical faculty of over two hundred that represents excellence in every aspect of psychiatry. From psychopharmacologists to psychoanalysts, every member is committed to excellence in residency education. Several of our programs, including the Division of Forensic Psychiatry and Mood Disorders, enjoy international reputations. In addition, we are one of three programs in the country to have approval for the Post-Pediatric Portal Program, a training opporunity for pediatricians to become board eligible in adult and child psychiatry in three years. We also have fellowships in all subspecialty areas of psychiatry: Child & Adolescent, Addictions, Forensic, Psychosomatic (Consultation/Liaison), Geriatrics, and Community Psychiatry.

The didactic program is a real strength of our residency, with extensive education in psychopharmacology, psychodynamic theory and practice, and psychosocial interventions. The clinical program at University Hospitals of Cleveland is one of the finest in the country. We provide a high level of clinical supervision, including ongoing assessment of the core competencies in psychiatry. Video precepting is utilized at a number of our training sites. Residents receive a wealth of experience in general adult psychiatry with core rotations in the psychiatric subspecialties. There are elective blocks in the second year, and the fourth year includes an opportunity to develop teaching and leadership skills as a junior attending. The majority of the rotations in the 4th year, however, are electives. This structure provides residents with ample opportunity to explore areas of interest and enables them to customize their education to meet their own professional needs. Call is very reasonable, and the level of staff support is excellent. The didactic program is comprehensive and challenging, covering the core knowledge in psychiatry and additional areas relevant to psychiatric practice.

Our department is undergoing some very exciting changes. We have just recently moved to the W. O. Walker Center which is just a few blocks from the main campus of University Hospitals. We have ample space, state-of-the-art video-conferencing capabilities here, a beautiful auditorium for Grand Rounds and other educational events, and lovely offices. We are expecting that our inpatient units will also relocate in December ‘08 to a community hospital where an entire floor is being renovated for us. We will have both a general adult psychiatric inpatient unit as well as a geriatric psychiatry unit. A brand new child inpatient unit opened at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital this spring and is both beautiful and very successful.

We believe that residency training should be exciting, rewarding and fun. Cleveland is a vibrant city with numerous cultural attractions, fine dining and professional sporting events. It is also a very affordable and livable city. The metropolitan area has some of the finest schools in the country. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie, Cleveland’s MetroPark system and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park offer activities in every season. The Psychiatry Residents Association, the resident governing body, is an active organization involved in planning a series of social and community service activities throughout the year. We believe that our residents should lead a balanced life, and we ensure that they have ample time to do so.

Our mission is to train future leaders in the field of psychiatry and to prepare them for the challenges of an increasingly complex health care system. We concern ourselves with the personal growth of each of our residents as physicians and as human beings, and we work diligently to assist them in reaching their full potential as psychiatrists. Our graduates pursue rewarding careers in clinical care, teaching, research and administration. They are a credit to our program and to the field of psychiatry.

If you are looking for a dynamic residency program, then Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals of Cleveland is the place to train. I look forward to hearing from you.
