Medical Ethics, Boundaries & Professionalism

Who Should Attend?

The Intensive Course in Medical Ethics, Boundaries and Professionalism is designed for physicians in all specialties who wish or need to pursue focused study in areas of applied ethics, including boundary maintenance, and practice management.

Statement of Need

The Doctor-Patient Relationship is a specially privileged relationship in our society. As a result, physicians are afforded access to information and confidences by patients that are not available to anyone else. Along with this privilege comes a series of professional responsibilities for physicians. More is expected of physicians than from most other professionals in our society.

The practice of medicine is governed by several important ethical precepts, including: confidentiality, beneficence, respect for patient autonomy, truth telling and the highest degree of professionalism. Physicians work within the guidelines of these principles. Yet medical practice can also be challenged by these principles, particularly when two or more of them are in conflict. This expertly taught intensive course – liberally employing case presentations – focuses on applied ethics, from boundary issues to billing practices.
