Cytopathology has been a strength in our department since the 1940s, when Dr. James Reagan, a pioneer in cytopathology, established a legacy of excellence in cytopathology service, research, and education. The Cytopathology Section is structured into two services - gynecologic cytopathology ("Pap smears") and non-gynecologic pathology, which includes specimens from urine, sputum, cerebrospinal fluid, various effusions, and aspirates from tumors in liver, lung, and other body sites. Our Department processes approximately 28,000 Pap smears and approximately 5,000 non-gynecologic specimens each year. Cytopathology cases are signed out by Faculty with subspecialty expertise; most are Board-certified in this subspecialty.
