All applications are reviewed in the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) and other forms of application will not be considered.
Our program strives to train residents who are distinguished by their excellent fund of recent medical knowledge, effective communication skills, and commitment to a career in pathology. Among qualifications that are considered in evaluating an application are medical school transcripts, letters of recommendation (3), postgraduate activities and USMLE Board scores. Because many criteria are considered, it is not possible to give a meaningful "cutoff" for Board scores alone but failed attempts and scores below the 80th percentile are becoming unacceptable in the more competitive programs. Step 1 CK & CS and Step 2 are required to apply; Step 3 is not required but can be important if there is a failure on one of the other examinations. However, a failure on one of the exams does not necessarily exclude a candidate with strong credentials.
Graduates of Foreign Medical Schools must have completed their certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) before application. Our program sponsors non-US residents for J-1 visa status only. We will not interview candidates who do not have the ECFMG certification with their application.
Clinical experience is not required. Other educational credentials, such as a PhD or Master’s, are more desirable although not necessary. Publications in peer reviewed journals can help to improve a candidate’s application.
Approximately 75 candidates are invited for interview each year to fill approximately six PGY-1 positions. The Residency Committee evaluates all of the interviewed candidates to select the incoming class. Interviews are offered on a rolling basis, so applicants are strongly encouraged to apply as early as possible to avoid the interview schedule filling before the application is received. In previous years, the interview schedule has filled by January of the year in which training is to begin.
