The Department of Pathology offers a Research Track for Residency Training in Anatomic Pathology (AP) or Clinical Pathology (CP). This track is intended for those residents who are committed to research-intensive careers in academic pathology with the goal of establishing an NIH-funded laboratory research program. Applicants must have a strong background in biomedical research, preferably MD-PhD training. The Research Track is fully compliant with the American Board of Pathology requirements for residency training.
Thirty months of required rotations in Anatomic or Clinical Pathology will be completed along with 18 months of research. Research mentors may be chosen from faculty of the Department of Pathology, other clinical departments at UHCMC and basic science departments at CWRU School of Medicine. Research areas include, but are not limited to, Immunology, Cancer and Neurosciences. Research programs are described under the Division of Experimental Pathology.
In addition to the six months of research during the three-year accredited residency in AP or CP, the Department will provide an additional 12 months of salary support for Research Track residents. The resident in the Research Track will be expected to identify a research mentor within the Department as early as possible, before starting the residency if possible or within the first 6 months of the residency. Progress during the Research Track will be facilitated by the Residency Director with the goal of enhancing the career objectives of the resident.
