Missed Opportunities for HIV Testing

Health care providers are missing key opportunities to test patients for HIV, according to Ann Avery, MD, assistant professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and an infectious disease specialist at MetroHealth Medical Center.

By analyzing hospital and primary-care visit data, Avery found that many patients were never tested for HIV and those who test positive for HIV had been seen at a hospital or clinic previously where they could have been tested, but weren't.

The CDC recommends that all adults get tested for HIV at least once, but actual testing falls far short of that goal.
