Erin Lavik, ScD, the Elmer Lincoln Lindseth Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering, received a $2.3-million NIH Director's New Innovator Award to continue her work with synthetic blood platelets.
Using nanotechnology, Lavik has developed artificial platelets that bind with the body's own platelets to stop bleeding faster. Her lab will continue testing the synthetic cells in treating traumatic injuries. She also plans to develop new models of drug delivery based on the system the platelets use to home in on their natural counterparts.
The award is designed to support unusually creative new investigators with highly innovative work at early stages in their careers.
