Tuesday February 2 -About the Darwin Celebrations
Beginning in the Fall of 2008, departments from across the university began sponsoring events and programs celebrating the life of Charles Darwin, his work and the diverse ways in which evolutionary theory continues to influence research and thought in biology and other fields. Some of these events will be intended primarily for an academic audience and others will be intended for the general public. On an ongoing basis, prominent individuals who have contributed significantly to the progress and popularization of evolutionary science will visit Case Western Reserve to deliver lectures, and participate in discussion groups or workshops to continue the celebration. Charles Darwin was born in 1809 (February 12, same day as Abraham Lincoln), making 2009 the 200th anniversary of his birth, and the 150th anniversary (November 24, 1859) of his enormously influential book, "On the Origin of Species".
