Canvas plagiarism tool: how to “TURNITIN”

Date Released: 19 October 2017

Note new session time is 11:30-12:30

Turnitin (Tii) is a digital plagiarism detection tool that can be used to compare student academic writing submissions against many other written works to ensure originality. As of Fall 2017, Turnitin became available for use with all CWRU Canvas courses and can be added to any Canvas assignment as needed.

Through optional setting configurations, Turnitin’s LTI for Canvas allows faculty to customize the settings for each assignment as needed and can choose to have student submissions compared with more than 62 billion indexed web pages, more than 2.5 million Proquest scholarly articles and journals, as well as the over 15 million students submissions available for comparison via Tii’s database for similarity. Once the comparison is complete, Tii provides a similarity report that highlights areas of areas of similarity for review and/or sharing and discussion with students as needed to encourage academic integrity and improved writing.

In this session, faculty interested in learning how to use Turnitin with one or more of your CWRU Canvas courses are invited to join us.  This session will be led by Katie Skapin, from [U]Tech’s Teaching + Learning Technologies team.

Some of the topics that this session will cover include:

  • Comparing Blackboard and SafeAssign with Canvas and Turnitin

  • Adding Turnitin to Canvas Assignment

  • Configuring Turnitin Submission Settings

  • Exploring Student View of Turnitin Submissions

  • Grading & Turnitin Submissions

Join us on Thursday, October 19 from 11:30 - 12:30 p.m. in the Herrick Room, which is on the ground floor of the Allen building (at the corner of Adelbert and Euclid). Pizza lunch and sodas will be provided at this session.
