Exploring the Learning Management System

Date Released: 4 June 2015

UPDATE: Here is the link provided by Brian Yuhnke following the session for those who want to know more about the way that CWRU is planning to evaluate the LMS systems under review.

Learning Management Systems like Blackboard are now ubiquitous on college campuses. But like all other aspects of technology in the internet age, they change rapidly and need to be constantly evaluated for appropriateness.

In the months ahead, Information Technology Services will lead a multi-faceted effort to evaluate the learning management systems that students, faculty and staff members use each day for coursework and communication, such as Blackboard Learn, Moodle, and eCurriculum to see if there needs to be any changes. In the fall semester, they will also be piloting in a few courses an alternative LMS called Instructure Canvas, though this is just part of the evaluation process of alternative LMSs. The decision about whether to maintain Blackboard or move to another system will be the result of the year long evaluation process.

At the next UCITE session, Tina Oestreich, Mike Kenney, Brian Yuhnke, and Katie Skapin of Information Technology Services will lead an open discussion about the learning management systems we currently have on our campus. This will provide an opportunity for you to share your thoughts on how you use it, what features you like, and what challenges you may have. They will also provide details about the year-long initiative and provide information on how you can get involved.

Join us for that session on Thursday, June 4, 2015 from 12:00-1:00 pm in the Herrick Room, which is on the ground floor of the Allen Building (at the corner of Euclid and Adelbert). Please use the Adelbert Road doors.

Pizza lunch, sodas, and water will be provided at this session. To help us estimate the amount to order, please let us know if you plan to attend each session by replying to this email to ucite@case.edu.
