Uploading Videos to YouTube

YouTube is a free, online video hosting product used by millions of people worldwide. It's a great place to host your videos and share them with your audience, whether that be one person or the entire globe. You can even embed your video into an external website, such as Blackboard or Google Sites. Click through the steps below to get started with hosting videos on YouTube. 

If you've never created a YouTube account, you'll need to do that first before uploading videos. Here's what to do:

  1. Navigate to
  2. Click on the Sign in button in the upper right corner of the screen and log-in using your CWRU Network ID and password.

  3. Now we'll need to enter the Creator Studio. To do so, click on your icon in the upper right corner and select Creator Studio

  4. Click on the large Create a channel link.

  5. Enter in the name you want displayed on your account, then click Create Channel.

Once you have your YouTube account created, you'll need to have your video ready to go. For more information on creating videos, please see our Video & Screencasting tools page.

Once your video has been created, make sure you've saved it as a YouTube supported video format. YouTube supports the following video types:

  • .MOV
  • .MPEG4
  • MP4
  • .AVI
  • .WMV
  • .FLV
  • 3GPP
  • WebM

By default, the maximum file size you'll be able to upload to YouTube is 128GB and the maximum duration is 11 hours. For more information on this, please see YouTube's support page here.

Now that you have a YouTube account and have created your video, it's time to upload it to YouTube! Here's what to do:

  1. Navigate to and sign in if necessary.
  2. Click on the Upload button in the upper right corner.

  3. Either drag-and-drop or click to upload your video file. Your video will automatically begin to upload.

  4. While your video is uploading, you will see the video upload page. Here you can add a title and brief description to your videos, as well as tags that users can use to help find your video. You can also set the video's privacy settings and add your video to a playlist. Do not navigate away from this page until your video has finished uploading.

  5. Once your video has uploaded and processed, click Publish to publish your video.

After your video has been uploaded, you may want to customize its settings further and add enhancements. To apply all of these changes, you'll need to edit the existing video by going to the Video Manager. You can find the Video Manager from the Creator Studio, or directly at

Change Video Privacy Settings

There are three different privacy settings for YouTube Videos: public, unlisted, and private.


Public Anyone can access this video. It can be searched for and found on YouTube.
Unlisted Only people with the video URL can view the video. It cannot be found via search unless it's added to a public playlist.
Private Only those people given access to the video can view it. It is invisible to other users and cannot be found via search.

Here's what to do to change the video privacy settings:

  1. Access the Video Manager.
  2. Click Edit for the video you want to change.

  3. Scroll down to the privacy drop-down and select the appropriate level of privacy.

      1. Click Share.
        Click Share
      2. Enter in email addresses of specific users or select anyone with a CWRU email address, then click OK.

        Enter Names and click OK

      3. Click Share to save your pending changes and send email to users.

  4. Click Save Changes to apply changes to your video.
