The Campaign for Case Western Reserve University

Frank N. Linsalata, Chair, Forward Thinking: The Campaign for Case Western Reserve University

From the Campaign Chair:

A week ago, I had the privilege of telling you that we set another all-time record for attainment in the past fiscal year—a $145.9 million total that brought overall campaign giving to $861.4 million. Five days later, I shared news of the $15 million commitment that Nancy and Joe Keithley made to Case Western Reserve and the Cleveland Museum of Art for our joint programs in art history.

This evening, I bring another announcement, made during the Inamori Ethics Prize ceremony at Severance Hall: Chuck and Char Fowler have pledged $6 million for fellowships for MBA students pursuing sustainable value.

In 2010, we named our annual spring giving celebration "Momentum." Weeks like this one make that title feel remarkably prophetic. Consider this definition of the word from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary: "the strength or force that allows something to continue or to grow stronger or faster as time passes."

That strength, that force—it comes from all of you. Our campaign leaders rally alumni and friends. You celebrate triumphs. And you tell the stories of excellence that engage still more people in supporting our university. And, as we have seen over the past several days, successes have a way of building on themselves.

In 2006, the company Chuck co-founded, Fairmount Minerals, gave $2 million to the university to endow a professorship in Social Entrepreneurship at the Weatherhead School of Management. Three years later, Chuck and Char committed another $7.5 million to create the Fowler Center for Sustainable Value, also at the Weatherhead School. Now they are building on those investments by providing support to top MBA students interested in this area of management education. The Fowler Family Fellows will conduct research and develop teaching cases on sustainable value—cases that management professors the world over can apply to their classes.

Chuck is the chair of our board, while Joe Keithley is a longtime trustee. Because of their involvement, they know well the university's strengths and opportunities. To have individuals who have participated so actively in the leadership of the university give so generously sends a powerful statement to the entire community: Case Western Reserve inspires confidence, not only in those who see us from afar, but also among the people who know the campus best.

We are profoundly grateful to every member of our campaign committees and to our committee chairs. We deeply appreciate every donation. This week we celebrate all of those who provided support in the last fiscal year—as well as those leading the way for even stronger results in the year to come.

Thank you.
