To Our Campaign Volunteers:

It is my great privilege to announce a historic moment in the life of Case Western Reserve: We have expanded our campaign goal to $1.5 billion.

Board of Trustee Chair Chuck Fowler shared the news tonight at the dedication of the Tinkham Veale University Center – which had been one of the priority projects of our original campaign. We have not set a new target end date, preferring instead to assess carefully what timeframe is both ambitious and achievable.

University President Barbara R. Snyder also announced tonight that our campaign total as of July 31 is $1.04 billion. This news means that we surpassed our original goal 2 ½ years ahead of our initial target of December, 2016. This extraordinary achievement represents remarkable efforts by our faculty, staff and alumni – and also by you. In fact, in many instances the most effective advocates for university philanthropy are those moved to act purely because of how much they believe in the institution.

Consider trustee and campaign volunteer Larry Sears ('69), who was one of the fiercest lobbyists for the space that we now know as think[box] and was so persuasive that his friend Barry Romich ('67) was among the first donors to the effort. Now Barry is so much of a convert that tonight we announced that he had doubled his original $1 million gift.

Tonight we also had the honor of announcing that the $6.7 million commitment Chuck Fowler and his wife Char made to support Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer research took the campaign past its original $1 billion goal. Char also joined with Roe Green as we announced their two gifts, totaling $4 million, to name the studio theater at The Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center at the Temple – Tifereth Israel.

As many of you know, student support has been a central part of our campaign from the start. As President Snyder says, no highly qualified student should have to enroll somewhere else because of expense. The good news is that this subject has resonated deeply with our supporters; so far we have raised $150 million for scholarships and fellowships Even so, we still do not have the resources to meet 100 percent of student need.

As we expand this campaign, then, we have committed to redouble our efforts to ensure that cost does not keep top students from receiving a Case Western Reserve education. This evening I had the honor of announcing a remarkable addition to our totals. President Snyder and her husband, Michael, have pledged $1 million, paid over time, to fund undergraduate scholarships. Access long has been a prime principle for her, and with this gift, she has demonstrated the seriousness of her commitment.

Our other leading priorities are support for faculty. To date we have we have completed or started more than 60 endowed professorships, but we need more to continue to attract more outstanding teachers and scholars – and keep the great ones we have. The third major priority is capital projects, including our Health Education Campus, think[box] and an interdisciplinary science and engineering research building. To date we have raised $176 million for renovations and new construction.
