It is a nonprofit corporation incorporated under Ohio law on July 1, 1967, and is the legal successor in interest to Case Institute for Technology and Western Reserve University as well as their respective predecessor institutions (among others, Adelbert College, Western Reserve College, and Flora Stone Mather College).

The university is an organization that is exempt from tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 and is classified as a public charity under Section 509(a) of the code.
