Assistant Professor, Systems Biology and Bioinformatics Graduate Program - School of Medicine

The Department of Nutrition & Center for Proteomics and Bioinformatics (https://case.edu/medicine/nutrition/) is recruiting an Assistant Professor to fill a major role in supporting teaching and research in the Systems Biology and Bioinformatics (SYBB) graduate program of the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University (https://case.edu/medicine/nutrition/education-programs/systems-biology-bioinformatics-programs-ms-phd). Successful candidates will receive a full time (12-month) non-tenure track faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level with a primary appointment in the Department of Nutrition and a secondary appointment in the Center for Proteomics and Bioinformatics. 

The SYBB program trains both MS and PhD students to combine experimental and computational/mathematical disciplines to understand complex biological systems. We are looking to hire a faculty member primarily to expand our current graduate training programs and secondarily to expand our research programs. The successful candidate will assist in the teaching of current SYBB courses, will develop additional courses to employ mathematical modeling, programming, computational, or visualization approaches to the analysis of large scale biological data sets, and will conduct research in their field of interest as a PI and as a collaborator with faculty within the Department of Nutrition and across the School of Medicine. 

Candidates should have domain experience in genomics, proteomics, structural biology or related fields and be comfortable employing mathematical/computational analysis and modeling to build meaning from these data. Additional desired skills would be programming or teaching experience utilizing python or R to analyze multidimensional biological data. The ideal candidate will have a PhD or other relevant terminal degree (e.g. MD) and have demonstrated experience in teaching and research in his/her related field at the university level.

The successful candidate’s primary responsibility will be to teach at the graduate level in the SYBB program. Additional responsibilities include developing new courses, advising/mentoring students, conducting research, participation in SYBB committees and programs and involvement in relevant activities of the Department of Nutrition and the Center for Proteomics and Bioinformatics in the School of Medicine. In their research, the successful candidate is expected to lead and/or participate in collaborative research programs leading to publications in high-quality refereed journals and to secure partial salary support through external funding. Some start-up resources may be available to support candidates who have strong initial funding plans. The department is particularly interested in candidates with research expertise in mass spectrometry, proteomics, metabolomics, microbiome, structural biology, and/or computational biology.  

Salary and benefits are competitive and salary will be commensurate with experience. The anticipated starting date will be September 1 or a mutually agreed upon date.
