The Case School of Engineering (CSE) is seeking qualified candidates to fill a tenure-track faculty position in the area of functional materials at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE). For exceptional candidates, appointment at the rank of Associate Professor will be considered. The hiring focus will be on candidates with demonstrated experimental research experience, which may be combined with materials data science and simulations. All candidates must demonstrate a sound fundamental understanding of functional materials. Candidates are expected to develop strong research programs covering both science and engineering of materials. Emphasis will be placed on applicants with a record of research accomplishment and promise in the fields of electronic materials, materials for energy conversion and storage, and/or “quantum-effect” materials. Individuals should be seeking to carry out research and teaching in a highly collaborative environment, within MSE and across disciplines. The applicant must hold a PhD degree in MSE, or a related field, and should be passionate about teaching undergraduate and graduate courses within the field. Successful applicants shall demonstrate the potential to build an externally funded research program. We are especially interested in candidates who can contribute, through research, teaching, and/or service, to the excellence and diversity of the academic community.
The School of Engineering at CWRU is noted for innovation and collaboration. Currently active research topics within the department include electroceramics and magnetic materials. The MSE department has access to excellent facilities in the Electroceramics Lab, Magnetics Lab, Nitinol Commercialization Accelerator Lab (NCAL), Swagelok Center for Surface Analysis of Materials (SCSAM), SDLE Research Center, High Performance Computing (HPC), and Sears Think[box], an innovation center, makerspace and fabrication studio. The department was recently awarded two NSF Engineering Research Centers (HAMMER and CASFER) and the DOE Materials Data Science Stockpile Stewardship Center of Excellence.
Start date for this position is negotiable; the department will consider a start date as early as January 2024.
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates at the Assistant Professor level are required to have received a PhD from an accredited university in Materials Science and Engineering or a related discipline, should have demonstrated a record of research and scholarship demonstrating impact in functional materials, and provide a vision of research and teaching excellence at their convergence.
An appointment at the level of Associate Professor will require, in addition, evidence of a national reputation for research expertise and a distinguished record of publications, funded research, and successfully applied pedagogies for mentoring researchers.
Regardless of rank, all candidates must demonstrate a commitment to diversity and a willingness to assume appropriate service and administrative tasks.
How to Apply:
Applications should include a cover letter, a complete CV, statements of research, teaching, and diversity, and a list of at least three potential referees who can be contacted for letters of reference.
- The research statement (3-5 pages) should provide a clear understanding of the applicant’s plans for future research programs and plan of funding submissions.
- The teaching statement (2 pages) should provide insight into the applicant’s interests, experiences, and philosophy for enriching the learning of emerging scholars both in and out of the formal classroom. The current CWRU MSE curricula are available online and can be reviewed in the context of preparing a teaching plan. They are found at: https://engineering.case.edu/materials-science-and-engineering/academics.
- The diversity statement (2 pages) should provide a clear record of the applicant’s past (if applicable) and proposed efforts to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion of historically excluded individuals in their teaching, research, and/or service and/or how individual and/or collaborative efforts have promoted, or will promote, diversity, equity, and inclusion inside and outside institutions of higher learning.
All application materials should be submitted via Interfolio at http://apply.interfolio.com/126949. Review of applications will begin on August 21st, 2023, and will continue until the position is filled.
