James C. Wyant Director of Athletics and Chair, Department of Physical Education

Case Western Reserve University seeks a dynamic and energetic leader to become its new James C. Wyant Director of Athletics and Chair of Physical Education. As a member of the University Faculty, this position will hold a faculty rank commensurate with experience. The Director will oversee 19 varsity sports, 14 club sports, 35 intramural activities and an extensive program of physical education and personal fitness opportunities for students. The institution competes in Division III of the NCAA and is a member of the University Athletic Association (UAA). The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep commitment to the spirit of Division III athletics.  

SUPERVISOR:  Louis W. Stark, Vice President for Student Affairs


1.    Provide a clear vision of the role and mission of the department and provide the leadership and management that will achieve excellence across the department's comprehensive programs.
2.    Supervise a competitive Division III intercollegiate program that fully complies with all applicable NCAA, UAA and University policies and legislation.
3.    Oversee the University's required physical education program that includes every undergraduate student, and support the department's efforts to provide athletic and recreational participation opportunities to students with a range of interests and skills through the club sport and intramural programs.
4.    Support, mentor and recruit an inclusive faculty and staff who are successful in their positions and who are also integrated into the greater University community. Provide professional development opportunities for department members. Support and model work-life balance expectations and responsibilities. Promote a full commitment to increased diversity and inclusion and gender equity.
5.    Lead strategic planning and communicate departmental goals and objectives effectively. Monitor the plan's progress and manage budget and resources in accordance with producing desired results.
6.    Manage an effective marketing program that promotes all areas of the department.
7.    Identify, cultivate, and engage emerging leadership.
8.    Work cooperatively and communicate effectively with the entire Case Western Reserve community, including students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, parents and the public.
9.    Oversee the department's recruiting efforts of a broadly diverse group of student-athletes who will succeed academically and represent the athletic program and the University with distinction.
10.    Work with the Alumni Office and Development to strengthen relationships with alumni and friends, while assisting in raising funds as directed.


  • Master’s or advanced degree is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience as an athletic administrator managing a successful athletics 
  • Extensive knowledge of NCAA policies and regulations.
  • Experience in facilities oversight and planning, budget management.
  • Strategic planning experience and demonstrated expertise in the execution of strategic and operational plans


  • Possess exceptional communication skills with an ability to serve as an effective spokesperson for the department and the University. 
  • Ability to collaborate and develop partnerships effectively across the University and in the greater Cleveland community.
