Post-Doctoral Scholarship Opportunity

The Mary Ann Swetland Center for Environmental Health at Case Western Reserve University, School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio is seeking a post-doctoral scholar to contribute to the Center’s vibrant program of research focused on environmental health equity. The mission of the Swetland Center is to study the complex interplay between the environment and health with the goal of translating findings into scalable solutions to redress the environment's disparate impact on residents in Cleveland and beyond. The strategic vision of the Swetland Center is to innovate and apply community systems science for environmental health equity by (1) advancing translational environmental health research, (2) integrating environmental health and community systems science into medical and graduate education, and (3) engaging the community in environmental health research and action.

This post-doctoral scholar position is focused on integration of qualitative, contextualized, and community-engaged research approaches to support the Center’s food systems and health equity research portfolio. The post-doctoral scholar will have an opportunity to develop new independent research focused on environmental health issues related to food systems and underlying root causes such as poverty and racism to advance environmental health equity through community-engaged team science. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in public or population health, community nutrition, or related field. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in food-related research, community-based research, research with SNAP populations, and implementation research; skills in mixed methods, implementation science, contextualized analysis, and community-engaged research; and a record of translating research findings into publications.



The post-doctoral scholar will: Contribute to a team science approach through regular interaction with investigators, community partners, and other research staff; Lead the design and implementation of qualitative data collection using diverse methods (i.e., field observations, document review, interviews, focus groups, participatory systems modeling); Train research team members in community-engaged and qualitative methodologies; Develop methods to engage community members in food systems planning and decision making using systems and contextualized approaches; Collaborate with investigators on qualitative and quantitative data analysis related to the research aims including innovative methods for data visualization and dissemination using traditional and non-traditional venues; Contribute to grant writing to sustain the research; Provide leadership to the development of presentations and publications related to research serving as lead author on at least one manuscript; and Participate in seminars focused on environmental health equity. It is expected that the post-doctoral scholar will develop content expertise and a publication track record based on this experience.   1. Demonstrated training and skills in food systems science and health equity research.
  2. Expertise in collection, management, and analysis of qualitative data.
  3. Skills in novel environmental health research methods such as spatial analysis, network analysis, systems modeling, or other methods.
  4. Capacity to establish and maintain research partnerships with community stakeholders.
  5. Experience translating research findings to diverse audiences through publications, presentations, reports, and social media.
  6. Self-motivated and adaptive to pivots in research needs. Ability to work with minimal supervision to complete tasks.
  7. Experience facilitating institutional review board applications.
  8. Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.  Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and proven ability to successfully follow-through on assigned projects.  
  9. Strong, professional and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  10. Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work and communicate with various individuals from a broad spectrum of disciplines, technical and educational backgrounds within the department, school and university, and with individuals outside the university.
  11. Experience and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Power Point, and Excel.
  12. Must demonstrate willingness to learn new techniques, procedures, processes, and computer programs as needed.



Given the field-based nature of the research, the candidate must be physically present at the Mary Ann Swetland Center for Environmental Health in Cleveland, Ohio. There are no special health or safety hazards, environmental conditions or hazardous equipment or supplies. Must have personal, reliable transportation to travel to community sites throughout the project, documented mileage will be reimbursed.  Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends as needed. This appointment can be extended pending annual performance review and available funding.
