The School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Genetics & Genome Sciences. The Department has a long history of outstanding research (https://case.edu/medicine/genetics/). CWRU seeks an outstanding scientist with the skills and vision necessary for maintaining and strengthening a department with an innovative research program that integrates genetics and genomics research across the School of Medicine (SOM) of CWRU, and its faculty. In addition, the Department oversees the clinical genetics activities of University Hospitals Health System (UHHS) through the Center for Human Genetics (https://www.uhhospitals.org/rainbow/services/pediatric-genetics). Importantly, the candidate will have the opportunity to further develop and foster strong translational and disease-impacting research in the department and with CWRU faculty who are located across the campuses of: UHHS, Cleveland Clinic (including the Lerner Research Institute), MetroHealth Medical Center, and the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. The Department has an outstanding education portfolio with both PhD and MS (genetic counseling) programs that significantly contribute to the mission and overall strength of the SOM. The Department graduate training programs emphasize core competencies, diversity, equity, and inclusion in its recruitment, mentoring, and career development.
The Department has strong collaborative efforts and membership in the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Cleveland Brain Health Consortium, and the Cleveland Institute for Computational Biology (see https://case.edu/medicine/departments-centers/centers-institutes). CWRU encourages and facilitates collaborative interactions among scientists in the Schools of Medicine, Engineering, Nursing, Dentistry, and the College of Arts and Sciences. Extensive expertise exists in genetics/genomics and whole genome analysis, cancer genetics, small molecule and drug development, model organisms, neurogenetics, computational biology, bioethics, epigenetics, proteomics, microbiome, stem cell biology and modeling (including induced pluripotent stem cells), cystic fibrosis, and children’s health. The new chair will be expected to capitalize on these and other resources to build cross-institutional collaborative research and educational programs. While it is expected that the chair will continue their commitment to research and training in their field of interest, the chair is also expected to recruit and train a diverse cohort of faculty who offer a breadth of perspectives and approaches to scientific interrogation that reflect this diversity, and to focus on career development for all trainees and faculty.
The SOM research mission is supported by excellent core facilities that include four cores housed in the department: high-throughput drug screening; genomics & sequencing; induced pluripotent stem cell production; and transgenic animal model development. Additional SOM cores include: behavioral testing; physiological phenotyping; proteomics; metabolomics; human and small animal imaging; super-resolution microscopy; flow cytometry; structural biology, data management; biostatistics; tissue and genomic repositories; and computational biology & bioinformatics.
Applicants must have an MD and/or PhD or equivalent degree, with a record of scientific achievement recognized at the national/international level by peer review and recommendations, demonstrated leadership and collaborative skills, and a commitment to the education and mentorship of both trainees and faculty with attention to underrepresented individuals at all levels. Appointment as a Professor of Genetics & Genome Sciences with tenure is anticipated.
