POSITION OBJECTIVE

Our research lab specializes in developing proteomics and systems biology tools to study biological processes important for human health, including inflammation, host immunity, and the microbiome. We are a highly interdisciplinary team of scientists with numerous international collaborations and partnerships and have funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. This position will join a diverse international team supported by recently awarded 5-year team grants to study reproductive health, HIV and cervical cancer.

The person who holds this position will work independently as Bioinformatics Manager in the lab.  This will include managing staff involved in data processing, managing bioinformatic pipelines, managing QC and data quality, guide others in data analytics, as well as provide bioinformatics/statistical support to the laboratory under the direction of the principal investigator. This position will also lead ‘omics analyses of assigned projects using advanced statistical modeling techniques in collaboration with clinical and other research partners. The person will be expected to present selected data at international meetings with collaborators or conferences. Other responsibilities of this position will include development of R-based tools for management of ‘omics data from the lab, the generation of reports to support the aims of the CIHR and NIH awards, carry out smaller components of collaborative research projects, assist in the publication of results from other lab members and the development of new hypotheses for grant applications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Manage the Bioinformatics Unit (70%)

  • Lead analysis on selected research projects, generate bioinformatic and statistical outputs and interpret data for reports and publications, and manage team members to deliver data analysis on assigned projects. 
  • Perform complex analysis as required by research projects. 
  • Co-develop research objectives and direction with principal investigator.
  • Develop and implement tools and workflows to process, analyze and integrate different high throughput data;
  • Supervise all phases of analysis from data processing and quality control through final analytical results and reporting;
  • Assist and support Faculty scientists in their research programs for the exploration and integration of proteomics, microbiome and high-dimensionality datasets
  • Use of computational and statistical approaches from the fields of systems biology to model, and interrogate the molecular interaction networks
  • Maintain and organize data repository for the lab.

 

Manage and lead junior bioinformatician staff (15%)

  • Developing and implementing training programs for staff
  • Lead data analysts and directing the work of staff applying bioinformatics and statistical tools

 

Prepare data analysis reports, assist in writing of research manuscripts, and grant applications. (15%)

 

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

2 full-time junior bioinformatics staff. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Minimum of 5 years’ experience in interpreting large-scale proteomics or other ‘omics data and related computer environment.  Knowledge of programming languages, including R.  Experience in human clinical ‘omics studies in infectious or chronic disease, including familiarity of epidemiological research in context of ‘omics data is essential.  Experience in generating programming for handling of large proteomic, microbiome, and/or genomic datasets.  Experience in writing scientific manuscripts. Experience and familiarity of proteomics or other ‘omic analysis in HIV/AIDS, mucosal immunology, and/or microbiome is beneficial.

Education/Licensing: Ph.D. or M.Sc. required in Statistics, Biology, BioInformatics, Biostatistics, Computer Science or related field.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES

  1. Detailed knowledge of advanced statistical data analysis, including but not restricted to survival analysis, mixed modelling, linear regression, multivariate models, and related analyses. 
  2. Demonstrated expertise in Bioinformatics, Proteomics, Microbiome, Genomics or related datasets.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of ‘omic analysis in study of clinical research cohorts of infectious or chronic disease. 
  4. Professional and effective oral and written communication skills; good interpersonal skills with the ability to work and communicate with various individuals within and external to the University.  Must be able to clearly relay information to the PI and other researchers and prepare written documents for grant submissions, manuscripts, publications, etc. as needed.
  5. Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through.  
  6. Effective management skills; ability to lead, train, work with, and elicit cooperation from team members and staff. 
  7. Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team. Must be highly motivated, responsible, dependable and a self-starter. Must demonstrate a strong desire to learn and to advance research.
  8. Effective problem-solving skills; must demonstrate excellent analytical skills, sound judgment and good decision-making. 
  9. Must demonstrate flexibility and ability to work under pressure; must be able and willing to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timeline. 
  10. Willingness to follow protocols and provide suggestions to the PI. 
  11. Good computer skills; must demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office and data management.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Standard research lab environment. May need to work nights and weekends if necessary to complete data processing. Will need to complete all necessary DOES safety trainings.
