Science Café Cleveland presents
"Running the Gauntlet: Bird Migration and a Changing World"
AUGUST 10, 2009
FEATURING:
Dr. Sarah Mabey
(Environmental Studies, Hiram College)
and
Mr. Harvey Webster
(Cleveland Museum of Natural History)
EVENT INFORMATION:
Clevelanders see lots of migrating birds in and around the city, an unnatural environment that is ideally situated, for both humans and birds, on the Cuyahoga River and the shores of Lake Erie. Urban development balanced with the green spaces of Cleveland Metroparks provide an ever changing landscape that migratory birds must navigate to search for resources such as food and nesting grounds. With humans and birds sharing the same resources, how do migratory birds adapt to changes induced by human activity? Do cities offer benefits that might keep birds from undertaking costly migrations? If so, how can we as humans incorporate a spatial and temporal design into our changes to conserve and protect migratory species?
Come to August’s Science Café Cleveland and hear from expert Sarah Maybey on the adaptations of migrating birds, and from Harvey Webster on local examples involving Jacobs Field and Terminal Tower.
