To Catch a (White Collar) Thief:

The art and science of high-tech crime detection

SEPTEMBER 11, 2017

FEATURING:

Tom Corrigan and James Boazzo

FBI Special Agents

EVENT INFORMATION:

There has always been an arms race between criminals and law enforcement but that cycle has been accelerated by technology. Criminals are getting more sophisticated in their methods, requiring investigators to raise their game too. This is especially true when it comes to white-collar crime. For example, nowadays an international criminal enterprise can steal $250 million dollars or more from unwary people using only a few clicks of a mouse. These people could be anywhere in the world, creating a challenge for law enforcement to try and locate, arrest, and dismantle these criminal enterprises. Or you might have a cardiologist performing unnecessary invasive cardiac services in pursuit of maximum profits.

In such cases, how would you set about investigating such crimes and bringing the perpetrators to justice? In order to do so, the FBI and other law enforcement agencies need to get inside the minds of the criminals. To do this, law enforcement first learns the systems these fraudsters use to commit their crimes.  Then the FBI use data from these systems as well as other sophisticated techniques to more effectively utilize more traditional methods against these offenders, such as physical surveillance, the use of informants, computer and telephone intercepts, and expert witnesses.

Join FBI Special Agents Tom Corrigan and James Boazzo at this month’s Science Café Cleveland as they discuss how law enforcement tries to stay ahead of these fraud schemes.
