Science Café Cleveland presents
Understanding and Managing Obesity in Cleveland Children
JULY 9, 2018
FEATURING:
Shirley M. Moore, PhD, RN, FAAN
The Edward J. and Louise Mellen Professor of Nursing; Distinguished University Professor; Associate Dean for Research, Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, Case Western Reserve University
EVENT INFORMATION:
Over one in three children today in Cleveland are overweight or obese. In a large 3-year National Institutes of Health-funded study, the effects of two family-based approaches for weight management in 360 overweight/obese middle school, low-income urban adolescents, including the effects of exposure to an existing school-based program aimed at increasing physical activity were tested.
The results found that families in the study led challenging lives which may have interfered with their ability to engage in healthy weight eating and activity patterns. Many lived in high poverty, sometimes violent, and economically depressed neighborhoods. The study also found that over 30% of children reported to be food insecure, and most lived in neighborhoods with very limited healthy food options.
Family environmental habits regarding eating and physical activity and sleep are hard to change in the best of circumstances, and are likely to be even more challenging for the low-income families living in disadvantaged neighborhoods in this study. The results showed that approaches to reduce obesity in urban Cleveland low-income families should more fully address poverty and other social issues contributing to childhood obesity. This may entail more policy-related, whole-community approaches, and the inclusion of more environmental factors. Join us on this discussion at this month's Science Cafe Cleveland.
