EVENT INFORMATION:

While much attention is focused on the mysteries of deep space, there is an equally intriguing mystery closer to home, but in the opposite direction: deep underground. There is much that we do not know about what lies beneath our feet, under the Earth's crust... and many unanswered questions!

One particular mystery arose about 80 years ago, when it was discovered that Earth has a small, solid nugget of iron at its center—the inner core. Explaining how the inner core "seeded" and grew turns out to be surprisingly difficult. In our September Science Café, we will discuss these issues, how they relate to Earth's magnetic field, and what they might mean for other planetary bodies.
