MAJOR IN BIOLOGY

gel

Biology majors at CWRU take a core of three Biology courses:

  • BIOL 214, Genes and Evolution
  • BIOL 215, Cells and Proteins
  • BIOL 216, Organisms and Ecosystems

Each core course has a laboratory experience which meets every other week alternating with discussions of lab exercises, lecture concepts, and related topics. The laboratory experiences are important in mastering concepts and for gaining an understanding of the scientific method.

The typical sequence for taking the core courses is Biology 214 in the spring of the freshmen year, Biology 215 in the fall of the sophomore year, and Biology 216 in the spring of the sophomore year. The core courses should be taken in sequence since many of the elective courses assume the completion of one or more of these courses.

Beyond the core, students may elect to follow a curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology or a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology.

The biology department also offers an "Honors in Biology" curriculum.
