Democracy is built on the ability to debate, dissent and discuss issues that affect all citizens including social services, economic strategies, homeland defense, and civil rights. In order for progress to occur leaders and citizens alike must practice civil discourse. Simply put, discourse is the use of words to express thoughts, knowledge or ideas on a topic or subject. It is how we communicate with each other whether it is an argument, conversation, debate or speech. Through music, artists have used their platforms of influence to not only participate in the conversation but to continue the conversation and, at times, start them. Use this collection of education materials to teach students about music’s role in the discourse on race.
