Intermediate German I (German 201)

August 24-December 4, 2020
TuTh 1:00-2:15pm (Section 100)
TuTh 4:00-5:15pm (Section 101)

Course Description and Requirements:
This course is designed to further develop students’ linguistic knowledge of German language and their skills in using it, which are defined as German speaking, listening, reading and writing proficiency. Special emphasis will be given to the oral communication skills. The goals of the course will be to provide the student with a good oral command of the language in everyday settings, a solid knowledge of grammar and the ability to read and write moderately difficult German.
Our aim will be to develop an appreciation for the intricacies of language and the richness of another culture. The study of a foreign language and culture adds another dimension to our thinking processes and person; it also provides a fresh outlook on our own culture and language. The intermediate level course should be an opportunity for students to enrich their understanding of the cultural context in which the German language exists. Far beyond a mere inventory of grammatical notions, the study of German as a foreign language should gain an insight into the contemporary world, such as the modern cultural and business life.
Required Texts:
Augustyn, Prisca, Euba, Nikolaus: Stationen, 4th Edition - (MindTap Course List: 9780357029947, which includes 6 month online access to ebook and homework platform. There are also other options.
Attendance Policy:
Since class work is an essential part of the course, regular and active attendance is required. Three absences are allowed. For every additional absence for whatever reason, two points will be deducted from the student’s participation grade. Repeated and/or lengthy absences should be avoided.
Homework:
Homework consists in reviewing all the material that was discussed in class the day before. In addition, you are responsible for completing the workbook assignments for each Station online. They are due before each test. Additional assignments may be made from time to time, but the workbook alone represents a considerable investment of time and will therefore in large part provide the written exercises required for the course.
Lab Assignments:
German 201, a four-credit course, meets three hours (Tue/Thu) per week in class. In addition, students are required to complete the language lab section in the student activities manual online. It will help the students to understand spoken German and to pronounce the sounds of the language accurately. The lab assignments are due before each test.
Tests, Quizzes and Final Exam:
We will cover Stations 1-5 (Lektüre und Grammatik). There will be one vocabulary quiz per Station and one Station test at the end of each Station, dealing with the texts and grammar questions in class. In addition, the students will have to write two short essays at home. The topics will be announced. A cumulative final examination will be given at the end of the semester as well as an oral exam halfway through the semester.
Note:
The study of a foreign language requires careful, regular work on a daily basis. The learning material cannot be “crammed” in hurried fashion. Do not get behind! If you at any time have particular difficulty with an assignment, come in and see me at once. Delay in seeking advice will only make the problem worse. During the semester I am prepared to meet individually (by appointment) with any and all students enrolled in this course. That is especially true, however, during the first week of class and especially for students with disabilities who are registered with the Coordinator of Disability Services (368-5230) and who may need individual arrangements. In addition to regular class meetings, a German “Kaffeestunde” and other voluntary activities will be organized.
Grades:
They will be based on your oral participation in class, your preparation of homework and on essays, quizzes, tests, and the oral and final exams. Class participation includes being prepared for class, volunteering answers and regular attendance. It will be evaluated within the context of the oral participation performance of the class as a whole.
