Gina Gibney Performance
GroundWorks Dancetheater is bringing an original work by Case alumna Gina Gibney to Cleveland Botanical Garden, January 27-29. Part of GroundWorks' Landmarks Series and the Botanical Garden's Winter Awakenings, the program will include "Return" by guest choreographer Gibney with original score by Ohio composer Ryan Lott and "Book of Water" by GroundWorks' Artistic Director David Shimotakahara.
Those not familiar with either Shimotakahara or Gibney are in for a treat. Both have been applauded for their daring and thought-provoking work.
Gibney's choreography has been widely presented and commissioned in the United States and abroad. A recognized leader in combining the arts with community initiatives, she founded Gina Gibney Dance in 1991. In 1997, in response to her growing concern that women in professional dance were losing artistic and financial ground, the company was reconceived as an all-female troupe. Most recently, she has developed and implemented two community-based projects for the company: Women at Work, reaching the community with the transforming power of dance and creativity and Artists at Work, strengthening working relationships, supporting creation of new work and forming new lines of advocacy within dance communities. She has earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees from Case.
Shimotakahara launched GroundWorks in 1998, having 16 years as principal dancer with the Ohio Ballet. Recognized as "a master of manipulation" with "a reputation for inspiring his audiences to think," his choreography has been described as "ranging from lighthearted and outright humorous to contemplative, bittersweet and dramatic"...expressing "a high degree of emotion without being sentimental."
Together, the two have created an evening not to be missed.
Friday and Saturday evening performances begin at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday afternoon matinee is at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale now for $15 for Cleveland Botanical Garden members, $22 for nonmembers and $12 for students and seniors. After January 15, tickets will be available for $18 for members, $25 for nonmembers and $12 for students and seniors. Tickets are available through December 31, 2005 at HeightsArts Gallery at Lee Road near Cedar in Cleveland Heights for $25. For ticket reservations and information, call the Cleveland Botanical Garden Box Office at 216-721-1600 extension 123.
GroundWorks creates and presents groundbreaking work in contemporary dance that embraces risk and imagination, explores human experience, encourages interdisciplinary collaboration, expands the parameters of how and where dance is presented, and by so doing engages with and enlivens the community of which it is part.
