Week of October 31, 2005

News and Announcements

- In 1996, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum Education Department teamed up with Case to create American Music Masters, an annual event to celebrate rock and roll's legendary pioneers. This year’s AMM, again sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences, takes place October 31 through November 6 and is themed “A Change is Gonna Come: The Life and Music of Sam Cooke.” Exhibits, movies and concerts will celebrate the life and music of Cooke, and the annual American Music Masters Conference will feature leading musicians and scholars who will lead in-depth discussions of his life and music. For a full schedule of events, and registration information, visit http://www.case.edu/events/amm/.

- Recent books by Arts and Sciences’ Miriam Levin and Rhonda Y. Williams (history) are being recognized in major book prize competitions. Williams has earned the Letitia Woods Brown Memorial Prize from the Association of Black Women Historians for her book, The Politics of Public Housing: Black Women's Struggles Against Urban Inequality. Levin learned her recent book, Defining Women's Scientific Enterprise, was submitted by her publisher, University Press of New England, as its nomination for the Pulitzer Prize in the nonfiction category of American history. For more information on the books themselves and the awards, visit http://www.case.edu/news/2005/10-05/books.htm.

- The 19th annual Western Reserve Studies Symposium, "A Quiet Revolution: Land Use Initiatives in the Western Reserve," will bring farmers and land developers together to discuss new initiatives for land use in Northeast Ohio. The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, November 4, at Case's Squire Valleevue Farm, 37125 Fairmount Boulevard in Hunting Valley. Registration is $50 and includes lunch, parking, refreshments and printed proceedings, with discounted registration of $25 for students with school identification. For more information, contact Gladys Haddad, director of the Western Reserve Studies Symposium and adjunct professor in American Studies in Arts and Sciences, at 216-368-4117 or via e-mail gladys.hadded@case.edu. - Two Arts and Sciences events held locally last weekend became international through use of technology facilitated by Tom Knab, chief information officer for Arts and Sciences. First, the October 20-21 Ethnic Studies seminar and lecture, "The Power of Words: Literature, Politics, and Facts," featuring Kenyan author Ngugi wa Thiong'o, were webcast live to the world. Seminar coordinator Alice Bach (religion) has arranged for archived copies to be available on-line soon for further viewing. For more information, visit http://www.case.edu/artsci/ethnic/. Also, the October 20 seminar “Inventing an International Culture of Change (1870 - 1930) in Six Urban Centers," coordinated by Miriam Levin (history), featured an international participant/presenter. Martina Hessler from the University of Aachen in Berlin was connected to the seminar participants in the Baker-Nord Center for the Humanities by live interactive IP videoconference. In addition to the live seminar participation, Dr. Hessler also collaborated via videoconference with her colleagues on more than six hours of project work supported by an NSF grant, which was related to the seminar topic.

- All members of the university community are invited to celebrate Halloween at Squire Squire Valleevue Farm on Saturday, October 29, from 5-10 pm. Guests can enjoy a bonfire, hayride, marshmallow and hot dog roasting, children's activities and more – all free of charge. For more information, visit http://www.case.edu/farm/halloween2005.htm.
