News and Announcements

- Today marks the grand opening of The Samuel B. and Marian K. Freedman Digital Library, Language Learning, and Multimedia Services Center – the new, state-of-the-art information technology center in Kelvin Smith Library. The Center is the result of collaboration between KSL, the College of Arts and Sciences, and Information Technology Services' (ITS) department of Instructional Technology and Academic Computing (ITAC). Grand opening activities begin at 11 a.m. and will feature food, tours, and prizes, including iPod Shuffles and USB memory sticks. Read more about the Center in the latest issue of art/sci by visiting http://www.case.edu/artsci/newsletter/artsci-pg03.html.

- The third annual Case for Community Day takes place Wednesday, September 14, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Case staff, faculty, students, and alumni are encouraged to participate in this campus-wide community service event. Volunteer projects, which are geared toward improving and enhancing Cleveland’s community neighbors, range from painting houses to working with local schools. For more information, visit http://www.case.edu/events/cfc/.

- Just a reminder that Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Harvard University's W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of Humanities and jury chair of The Cleveland Foundation's Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards, will address the incoming first-year class at Case through its SAGES program next week on Thursday, September 15, at 11:30 a.m. SAGES students are expected to attend the event, with the remaining seats open to the public. Because of limited seating, registration is recommended by visiting http://www.case.edu/events/hlgates/.

- The Center for Chemical Dynamics, co-directed by Cather Simpson and Clemens Burda (chemistry), has received a grant to purchase “ultrafast instrumentation” equipment to conduct a broad spectrum of studies on the ways chemical molecules behave in the very beginning of chemical reactions. The grant was principally written by Simpson, and co-written by Burda and Mary Barkley (chemistry). For more information on the grant - and on how the new equipment will be used - visit http://www.case.edu/news/2005/8-05/simpson.htm.

- The most recent edition of the Case Research Newsletter is now available at http://ora.ra.case.edu/ospa/news/index.cfm.
