Lecture Notes Hydrogen Balmer Spectrum

April 17, 2000

Check manual and Web for time limits on rectifying any grading problems.

The last day of classes (May 1st) is the last date for resolution of all problems.

The Spectrometer

Pre-aligned: make only adjustments that are essential.

Ask for help if necessary.

Don't disturb the alignment.

Make sure slit and cross-hair are in sharp focus.

Study the spectrometer with your partner to understand its operation.

Diffraction Grating

Remember the equation:

m = dsin

Understand the vernier scale. Practice reading it.

Ask TA for help if necessary.

Angles

Total of 12 measurements

- angles for 3 lines on the left and 3 on the right.

- in 1st and in 2nd order.

One partner should measure the first-order lines (right and left)

and the other should measure the second-order lines.

No time extensions will be given

and there will be no opportunity to perform any measurements or analysis once the laboratory period has ended.
