Block on a Spring Demo

P115/P116 Laboratory Demonstration #17

* Block falls through height H, stretching spring

* Can measure V(t), or let it oscillate, and find amplitude

* Can "vary gravity" by using an inclined plane

Further information on Theory, Apparatus, Procedure, and Helpful Hints are available. Equipment is stored in Rockerfeller Room 302 and 302B. You must decide whether you want to measure the spring constant ahead of time or in class. Note that the distance travelled from initial point where spring starts to fight back (H) is twice the amplitude of oscillation about the (easily found) equilibrium point -- this may prove your point without measuring k.
