(1) Weigh the meter stick and spring scales beforehand. Do not account for the weight of the scale supporting the entire apparatus, as it is not reading its own weight.
(2) Balance the system beforehand (pre-test the setup) to account for any aberration in the uniformity of the meter stick or the scales.
