Mary M. Step, PhD is a social scientist conducting research on physician-patient communication. Her doctoral work in Communication Studies focused on the integration and measurement of communication and emotion in models of communication message effects. Her post-doctoral fellowship at Case Western Reserve University provided an opportunity to translate this work to health communication contexts. Driven by an interest in how physicians and patients use communication to build therapeutic relationships, Dr. Step is actively engaged in testing the relationship between physician relational communication and patient communication involvement in both recurrent cancer and cancer prevention contexts. She is also involved in research aimed at improved understanding of psychosocial needs during cancer survivorship.
